Maragogi Guide
Maragogi sits on the Costa dos Corais, on the northern coast of Alagoas, roughly 130 kilometres from both Maceió and Recife. It is called the Brazilian Caribbean because of the water — clear enough to spot fish from the surface, sheltered by a reef barrier stretching 137 kilometres.
This guide comes from the people who manage flats on Peroba Beach: what is genuinely worth your time, what depends on the tide, and what nobody tells you before you arrive.
The Galés natural pools
It is the trip that brings almost everyone to Maragogi — and the one that causes the most frustration, because it hinges on something outside your control.
The tour only runs when the high tide falls between 0.0 m and 0.6 m. Outside that range the corals stay submerged and the boats do not sail. Check the tide table for your travel dates before booking flights and accommodation: a full week of high tides means no natural pools at all.
Galés, Taocas and Barra Grande
There is a rotation between them and a daily visitor cap, so visits are not always concentrated on the same spot. The crossing takes 15 to 40 minutes depending on the destination.

On the shared catamaran, depending on the season and the operator. Speedboats and schooners, being smaller, cost proportionally more.

Each boat stays at most an hour and a half on site. Add the crossing both ways and the trip takes up a whole morning or afternoon.
Catamaran, schooner or speedboat
All three reach the same place. What changes is how many people go with you, how much sun you take and how much it costs.

The most shaded and the cheapest per person. Better if you are travelling with children or would rather not spend three hours in direct sun. Also the busiest.
Schooner · 12 seats
More basic and less crowded. A middle ground between the catamaran and the speedboat, with less shade.
Speedboat · 8 seats
Faster and almost private. Costs proportionally more — worth it for a group, not for a couple.
Bring your own mask and snorkel. Renting on site costs more and the quality varies. And the reef barrier runs for dozens of kilometres: outside the catamaran tour, you can swim among corals at several points at low tide.
Which stretch of coast suits you
The municipality has beaches all along the AL-101, north and south of the town centre. They vary widely in crowds and facilities — it pays to choose deliberately.
Peroba
The quietest in the municipality. Sea sheltered by the reefs, without the cluster of beach bars or the constant catamaran traffic. This is where our flats are.
O Pontal
Where the river meets the sea, with a wide stretch of sand and coconut palms. A few kilometres from Barra Grande — the busiest beach in the municipality, with full beach-bar facilities and where the catamarans depart.
Antunes
One of the most photographed in the area, with a wide stretch of sand and coconut palms. Easy to combine with Barra Grande on the same day.
Burgalhau
A quieter stretch, good for escaping the crowds without going far from the centre.
Camacho
A fishing beach, with jangada rafts on the sand and almost no facilities. Further on, Ponta de Mangue is the most remote and empty point in the municipality — a plan for those with a car and a full day.
São Bento
A village beach, with the historic chapel right behind it. You can combine a swim with a walk through the settlement.
Xaréu
Small and discreet, with almost no facilities. Worth it for the quiet and the water.
What to do when the tide does not cooperate
The chapel and the ruins
The settlement holds the ruins of an old monastery and the historic chapel. It makes for a different kind of morning, away from the sea, a few kilometres from the centre.
137 km of reef
The protected area extends well beyond Maragogi. Buggy tours cover the northern and southern ends of the municipality and solve the problem of beaches scattered along the AL-101 — you can see several in a day without driving.
The Visgueiro Trail
Away from the coast, the trail crosses forest and streams and reaches the hamlet where the Mulheres de Fibra association works. It is the plan for a cloudy day — and the one that shows the Maragogi a catamaran never reaches.
Snorkelling
Outside the catamaran tour, the reef barrier lets you swim among fish at several points at low tide — including close to shore, without a boat.
And doing nothing. Worth saying plainly: Maragogi is not a packed-itinerary destination. Peroba Beach, where our flats are, exists precisely for that.
Where to eat in Maragogi
The town centre, along the Maragogi Beach seafront, holds most of the restaurants, bars and shops. It is where you will have dinner most nights.
Small-scale fishing supplies much of what the seafront restaurants serve.
- SeafoodMaragaço, Camurim, Burgalhau and Tuyn appear regularly on regional best-of lists. Estrela do Mar, right on the beach, is known for its lobster and shrimp dishes.
- Beach clubManoa, on Barra Grande Beach, serves grilled fish, octopus and seafood — a full-day plan rather than a quick meal.
- Food marketOn the seafront in the centre, small stalls serve everything from quick bites to a full seafood meal, with a sea view. It is the honest, inexpensive option.
- Bistro and regionalDona Maragô Bistrô, with pizzas and crepes, and Sabor Nordestino, with regional dishes, break up the run of fish.
- And the flat's kitchenAll our flats have a full kitchen with cooktop and fridge. At a beach destination that matters: breakfast and one meal a day at home change the budget for the whole trip.
Where to shop
Fibre weaving on the Visgueiro Trail — local craft sold directly by the people who make it.
- Mulheres de FibraOn the Visgueiro Trail, the artisans' association weaves natural fibre pieces and sells them on site. It is the purchase that returns the most money to the community — and the one you will not find in an airport shop.
- ArtesmarThe craft centre brings together the town's main craft sellers and is the best way to buy directly from the people who make things in the region.
- Town centreAround Maragogi Beach there are assorted shops for whatever you forgot: sunscreen, flip-flops, a float, the usual.
- Bigger shoppingA large supermarket or a chain pharmacy: the nearest options are Maceió and Recife, 2h30 away. It pays to arrive stocked up.
- PaymentPix works almost everywhere, but carry some cash for parking and beach bars.
From the plane to the sand
Recife airport
Guararapes (REC) is about 134 km away, via the BR-101 South and then AL-101 North. Roughly 2h30 by car.
Maceió airport
Zumbi dos Palmares (MCZ) is about 133 km away, via the AL-101 North. Also around 2h30 by car.
Rental car
The beaches are spread along the AL-101 and there is no convenient public transport for visitors. Without a car you are limited to packaged tours.
In practice, choose the airport by airfare — the difference in driving time is irrelevant.

The best time to visit Maragogi
- October to JanuaryThe sunniest months, according to the Alagoas tourism board. Settled weather and calm sea.
- December to FebruaryHigh season. Busy town, crowded tours and higher rates — book well ahead.
- April to JulyThe rainiest stretch. Rain comes in bursts and the heat stays, but the water is less clear.
- TemperatureBetween 24 °C and 30 °C year-round. Maragogi has no coat-weather winter.
- What matters mostThe tide table, not the calendar. A July with favourable tides delivers more natural-pool days than a December of high tides.
